2011-2012 NBA Fantasy Basketball Point Guard Player Draft Rankings

Below are the initial NBA Fantasy Basketball Point Guard (PG) rankings for all thirty teams this season.  These might change a bit as players continue to move around.  I’m going to post these under the 2011-2012 Draft Rankings Tab at the top of the homepage so they will be easy to check as fantasy drafts approach.   Check back Tuesday for the Shooting Guard Rankings.

Tier 1 – The Fantasy Basketball All-Stars

1 Derrick Rose (CHI) – It seems like everyone is going with Chris Paul at the top of the board this year, but give me Derrick Rose anytime.  Rose is clearly the better scorer putting up 25.0 a game compared to Paul’s 15.9.  Rose really overtook the top spot with his huge improvement with the three point shot, taking nearly 5 per game and hitting 33.2%.  Hopefully he can continue to improve and approach the 36-37% range.  Even with the 33.2% on threes, he still held his overall FG% to a very respectable 46.8%.  Rose will only get better from here.

2 Chris Paul (NOR) -  Paul is an easy choice at number 2, even though there is some concern about the possibility of a trade and concern over the knee still lingers in the back of my mind.  He did play in 80 games last season but his scoring was way down to a career low of 15.9 PPG.  Assists (9.8 per game) and Steals (2.4 per game) are his strong points.

3 Russell Westbrook (OKC) – Much like Rose, Westbrook continues to improve his game.  He raised his scoring to 21.9 per game while increasing his assist numbers to 8.2 per game.   His steals figure increased to 1.9 per game and he increased his FG%, 3PT% and FT% in 2010.   One important stat for Westbrook is the increase of field goal attempts to 17.1 per game, he’s a big part of the Thunder offense and will continue to be heavily involved.

Fantasy Point Guard Questions (9/20/10)

It seems like every fantasy player has at least one question mark in their fantasy profile, so I thought we might as well put the obvious questions out there for each player before camps get started to have a good idea what to keep an eye on.

Deron Williams – How much is the loss of Carlos Boozer going to hurt Williams and how long will it take him to mesh with Al Jefferson?

Chris Paul – How is his knee?  Paul’s shots at the rim for the last four years:  29% in 06, 24% in 07, 27% in 08 and 20% last season.  Big dropoff last season, so let’s see if the knee is limiting him or if it is something else.

Point Guard Quick Hits and Ranking Adjustments (9/6/10)

It’s time to make another pass through the point guard rankings and start refining the original framework that I put up in late July.  I’ve had a few mocks and I have adjusted a few players after giving individual teams a more in depth look.  I also wanted to give a heads up to a bias that can creep into rankings.  I love Head to Head leagues and unfortunately my views of players sometimes gets skewed by this.  Every time you encounter a list of rankings on the internet, always stop and check the categories and whether the rankings are based more on H2H or Rotisserie play.

The latest PG rankings can always be found under the 2010-2011 Rankings tab at the top of the homepage.

Players Moving Down

Derrick Rose – After completing the fantasy team preview of the Chicago Bulls, it’s very possible that Rose loses some touches to newly acquired Carlos Boozer.  I also had the chance to watch Rose in the FIBA tournament and he still doesn’t trust his jumpshot.  He had plenty of opportunity to launch a few and just looked hesitant.  If that jumpshot hasn’t gotten better, then his ranking won’t go up as much as I expected.  His defense was getting better, but I think he’s just keeping the energy up right now for Coach K, which he probably won’t do over a whole season.

Deron Williams (32.9 FPS, 51.5 eFG%, 80.1 FT%, 37 MPG)
2009:    18.7pts/10.5ast /4.0reb/1.3stl/.2blk/3.3tov

It’s a tough choice at the top of the PG board, but I’m going with Deron Williams.    He took 3.4 threes per game last season, hitting 37%.  His free throw rate was exceptional at 39.7, showing that he isn’t just a set jumpshooter and will attack when he gets the chance, even through contact.  His Jumper/Inside game breaks down to 69%/31%.    Probably the biggest knock on him this season is the loss of his pick and roll partner, Carlos Boozer.  Al Jefferson will try to fill the hole, but it is going to take some time to mesh with Williams, which may cause Williams’ turnovers to creep up a little from last year’s 3.3 a game.
